Text Box: Former occupation in the LG: Director of Marketing Communications and Sales Training at a large health care carrier
Current business name: The GREATER Advantage, Inc.
Company website: www.greateradvantage.com and www.everybodywearsshoes.typepad.com
Your title:  Brand Strategist and stylist
Why did you decide to leave the LG?: A new CEO was taking over the company and planned a sweeping corporate restructure which change my job and responsibilities. Although I had a successful corporate career I’d always had entrepreneurial dreams. My friends asked me to join them in the development of a television show for cable. As model Veronica Webb said during a fashion show, “I would not be struggling behind in flats while my friends tipped down the runway in stilettos.” I prayed and went to church. It seemed God was giving his permission and promised to be with me on the journey. So, at the pinnacle of my career I turned down a new job (btw-no increase in salary) to pursue my dreams of having a more exciting and fulfilling life.
How did you plan your escape from the LG?: The corporate restructure was going to be announced the next week. I knew I had to resign before I became enthralled in a new team, new responsibilities and new challenges at work. So I wrote my letter of resignation and hand delivered it the next week.
When did you leave?: I left in January 2006.
Why did you select this particular business?: At first my business was a natural extension of my corporate work. I partnered with my best friend to give small business and underserved communities the strategies we’d learned in corporate America. Together we work with business and individuals from the outside and inside. I focused on marketing strategies and communications, while she focused on leadership and organizational development.
In the past I planned weddings and dreamed of working in a business that will allow me to use my passion for style and creativity. In fact my role on our television show was the Style Coach and planning cooking segments, makeovers, and style tips. I have since expanded into working as a stylist for personal clients, magazines, brand/advertising projects.
One sentence to describe what your business does: My side of the business is all about branding whether working with an individual or business, the
mission is to use style and marketing strategies to create engaging images and communications that reflect my client’s unique brand in the media.
The best thing about being a business owner: I get such a jolt of energy when I am working whether I’m writing, coaching, or planning a commercial shoot. When I completed my first fashion editorial I literally cried. I could not believe I was actually living my dreams. The best thing is to have the ability to feel free to pursue any and all opportunities God presents before me. I am so excited to help build a company that allows me to give my young family members much needed work experience.
The hardest thing about being a business owner: It has taken nearly three years to really step into my calling and it has not been easy to lose that
steady corporate paycheck.
Advice you would give to women wanting to leave their 9-to-5: Take the time to plan an exit strategy and an entrance strategy for your business. Take a look at the marketplace to discover what need that you can fulfill by doing what you love to do then do it. Don’t let fear keep you from stepping out on faith. You are going to need it!

Text Box: Former occupation in the LG:Corporate finance specializing in asset-back securities (sub-prime mortgage loan securitizations)
Current business name: Smart Heel (a product of Bach Enterprises)
Company website:http://www.SmartHeel.com
Your title: President & Founder, Bach Enterprises; Creator of Smart Heel
Why did you decide to leave the LG?: I started to get bored doing the same thing day-in and day-out. Since I was working so many hours, the only way I would have the time to figure out what I wanted to do “when I grew up” was to leave. So I did.
How did you plan your escape from the LG?: Over the 2004 holidays, I went on vacation. During that vacation, I decided I would resign when I returned home.
When did you leave?: I resigned on January 20, 2005
Why did you select this particular business?: I realized I wanted a profession more suited to my creativity and personality. My first solo endeavor stemmed from my love and passion for shoes. When I ruined a pair of Jimmy Choos immediately after stepping outside the store, I did an exhaustive but unproductive search for the right fix. So, instead, I made the solution myself. Smart Heel, the high heel protectors that I invented and patented, was born.
One sentence to describe what your business does: Smart Heel is a revolutionary product that just slips onto high heels before stepping outside. It's like a bullet-proof vest protecting heels from sidewalk hazards, like cracks, grates and curbs, to everyday common encounters with car mats, bar stools, and office chair wheels.
The best thing about being a business owner: I'm the boss. I'm responsible for everything good and bad that happens. I don't have to rely on the fate of a company run by someone else.
The hardest thing about being a business owner: Definitely the loneliness. I miss the camaraderie and teamwork of a big company.
Advice you would give to women wanting to leave their 9-to-5: Trust your gut, and do it!! Also, have some extra money stashed away before you leave. The first few months and even years can be rough with start-up expenses and without a reliable source of income.

It’s been a fulfilling experience, and though being independent comes with its own set of challenges, I’d never go back.
